PHOENIX (AP) — Hanley Ramirez and A.J. Ellis hit solo home runs in the 14th inning to propel the streaking Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was the 15th win in 18 games for the Dodgers and it vaunted them to within a game and a half of the Western Division-leading Diamondbacks.

PITTSBURGH (AP)— After losing their first 11 interleague meetings with Seattle, the Pittsburgh Pirates finally beat the Mariners. Francisco Liriano (leer-ee-AH’-noh) and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Pirates blanked the Mariners 5-0. Liriano is 9-3.

SEATTLE (AP) — Boston’s David Ortiz has passed Harold Baines to become Major League Baseball’s career leader in hits by a designated hitter. Ortiz collected his 1,689th hit as a DH in his first at-bat last night and also hit a two-run homer in Boston’s 11-4 win over Seattle.

CLEVELAND (AP)— The winner of the Andrew Bynum sweepstakes is the Cleveland Cavaliers. A person familiar with the deal says the free agent center, who missed the entire season with Philadelphia because of knee injuries, has agreed to a two-year deal with the Cavs that has $6 million in guaranteed money, and could reach $24 million with incentives.

NEW YORK (AP) — NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson is leaving his post on Aug. 1, and Rod Thorn will return to the league office as president of basketball operations. Jackson spent more than 13 years at the NBA and, in his current position, was in charge of all rules, conduct and discipline on the court.
