PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pinch-hitter Russell Martin singled home the winning run in the 14th inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates earned their ninth straight victory, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1. Pittsburgh, which reached the midpoint of its season with the best record in the majors at 51-30, is on its longest winning streak since 2004.
DENVER (AP) — Madison Bumgarner scattered four hits over seven innings, Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer and the San Francisco Giants ended their six-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Colorado’s Michael Cuddyer (kuh-DY’-ur) singled in the eighth off Sandy Rosario, extending his hitting streak to 27 games.
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Inbee Park is having a history-making season on the LPGA after winning the U.S. Women’s Open by four shots over I.K. Kim to become the first player to win the first three LPGA majors of the season. Next up for Park is the Women’s British Open at St. Andrews on Aug. 1-4.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Devils have acquired goalie Cory Schneider from the Vancouver Canucks for the ninth pick in yesterday’s NHL draft. Schneider seems in line to be the eventual successor to Martin Brodeur (mar-TAN’ broh-DYOOR’), the NHL’s career wins leader among goalies.
