MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Lionel Hollins says the Memphis Grizzlies have told him they will not renew his contract. Hollins took over midway through the 2008-09 season and led the team to the last three postseasons. He went 214-201 as the Grizzlies’ head coach, including a 143-87 mark over the last three years.
DETROIT (AP) – The Associated Press has learned the Detroit Pistons have hired Maurice Cheeks as their head coach. He replaces Lawrence Frank, who was dismissed in April following two seasons and a 54-94 record. Cheeks was 284-286 in the regular season and 5-11 in the playoffs as coach of the Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers.
UNDATED (AP) – A person familiar with the situation says quarterback Tim Tebow (TEE’-boh) will sign with the New England Patriots and join their minicamp today. Tebow spent last season with the New York Jets and was released in April after barely playing behind struggling starter Mark Sanchez.
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) – The Edmonton Oilers have hired Dallas Eakins (AY’-kihnz) as their fourth coach in the past five seasons. He replaced Ralph Krueger who was fired over the weekend after a 19-22-7 record in his only year on the job. The 46-year-old Eakins spent the past four seasons with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, reaching the Calder Cup final in 2012.
ARDMORE, Pa. (AP) – More heavy rain at Merion Golf Club flooded a bunker by the 11th green and filled fairways with large puddles and tiny streams, three days before the start of the U.S. Open. The course was closed for four hours during the first full day of practice, and then shut down for good yesterday afternoon. The forecast was for mostly dry conditions today and tomorrow, followed by a 40 percent chance of rain on Thursday for the opening round.
