BOONE, Iowa—A Boone County District Court jury returned a guilty of first degree murder verdict against 29-year old Joshua Powell Monday afternoon. Powell had been charged in connection with the death of his wife, Jaclyn last October 21st. At the time, Powell had indicated to authorities that he believed he had killed his wife, but claimed he couldn’t remember what happened. Autopsy results by the state medical examiners office showed that Jaclyn Powell had died of asphyxiation due to strangulation.
Jury selection began last Tuesday and opening arguments were presented on Wednesday. Testimony concluded last week and closing arguments were given Monday and following instructions from District Court Judge Steven Oeth, jurors began their deliberations. The jury returned late Monday afternoon with their verdict. Powell remains in custody, pending sentencing. The sentence for first degree murder is life in prison with out the possibility of parole.
