UNDATED (AP) – The NCAA regional semifinals will include 15th seed Florida Golf Coast and No. 13 La Salle. Bernard Thompson scored 23 points and Sherwood Brown added 17 as FGCU beat San Diego State 81-71 to become the first No. 15 seed to advance this far in the tournament. The Explorers pulled out a 76-74 win against Mississippi on Tyrone Garland’s layup with two seconds left.
UNDATED (AP) – Top seeds Indiana and Kansas have reached the NCAA regional semifinals. Jeff Withey’s 16 points and 16 rebounds led the Jayhawks past North Carolina 70-58 after Victor Olapido (oh-lah-PEE’-dohz) provided 16 points in the Hoosiers’ 58-52 triumph over Temple. In yesterday’s other NCAA games, Florida beat Minnesota 78-64, Ohio State downed Iowa State 78-75, Miami got past Illinois 63-59 and Duke ousted Creighton 66-50.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – UCLA has fired basketball coach Ben Howland following 10 seasons with the Bruins, a span that included three Final Four appearances but culminated with another early-round exit from the NCAA tournament. Howland had a 233-107 record in Westwood, including three consecutive Final Four appearances from 2006-08 and four Pac-12 championships.
MIAMI (AP) – LeBron James almost had a triple-double while the Miami Heat picked up their 26th consecutive win, a 109-77 pounding of Charlotte. James finished with 32 points, 10 assist and eight rebounds while the Heat played without Dwyane (dwayn) Wade because of a sore right knee.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – The final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational is scheduled to resume this morning in Orlando. Tiger Woods held a three-shot lead over Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, John Huh and Justin Rose when a violent thunderstorm hit Bay Hill, causing the round to be suspended.
