BOONE, Iowa—A couple of residents from the 5 Mile Drive area on the southeast side of Boone were at the Boone City Council meeting Monday to complain about the condition of the gravel portion of 5 Mile Drive. Public Works Director John Rouse had warned Council members about a month ago they would begin getting complaints about the condition of alleys and gravel roads. Rouse says with lack of ditches for drainage is difficult to maintain many of the alleys and gravel roads. He said at the Monday evening Council meeting that he does not disagree with residents. He says the problem is being able to try and do something without letting the roads and alleys dry out. The residential complaints were critical of the way 5 Mile Drive has been maintained. Mark Stone challenged council members to drive on 5 Mile Drive in it’s current condition. Rouse said he intends to present to the Council’s Public Safety and Transportation Committee a list of options available to deal with maintenance issues on gravel roads. That next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 27th.
