AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Lance Armstrong has finally admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France, making the confession during an interview with Oprah Winfrey. A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press of Armstrong’s admission, which will be aired on Winfrey’s network later this week. The confession was a stunning reversal, after years of public statements, interviews and court battles in which he denied doping and zealously protected his reputation.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Top-seed and defending champ Victoria Azarenka was a straight-sets winner in her first-round match at the Australian Open. Third seed Serena Williams didn’t drop a single game in advancing to the second round with eighth seed Petra Kvitova (kviht-oh-vah). Third seed Andy Murray was among Tuesday’s first-round winners on the men’s side.

UNDATED (AP) -Louisville moved up two spots to No. 1 in the latest Associated Press’ men’s basketball poll before cruising to a 73-58 win over Connecticut last night. This is just the second time in school history the Cardinals are on top, and the first since the season-ending 2008-09 poll. Indiana is second, following by Duke, Kansas and Michigan.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – An autopsy revealed yesterday says Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when he shot his girlfriend nine times and then killed himself in front of his coach and general manager. The Jackson County Medical Examiner report on Belcher raised new questions about whether police should have done more before the Dec. 1 murder-suicide. Officers found Belcher sleeping in his idling car about five hours earlier, but let him go inside a nearby apartment to sleep it off.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Oakland has given manager Bob Melvin a two-year contract extension through the 2016 season. The deal comes after Oakland became the first team in major league history to win a division or pennant after trailing by five games with less than 10 to play.
