Flu shots availability dwindles

Posted on 11 January 2013 by KWBG

Flu Shot 1.11.2013According to www.flu.gov, the flu is classified as “widespread” in all but 2 of the United States.  The CDC reports that Region 7, in which Iowa is located, is reporting elevated levels of outpatient flu treatment.

While there is still time to get the flu shot before the heart of flu season, there is a question of availability in Boone.  On Friday morning, KWBG staff called area flu shot providers.  For the most part, the traditional injection supplies are depleted.  Medical Associates Pharmacy was the only provider with a small supply of 70 doses of the traditional vaccine.  However, Hy-Vee and Walgreens did report a small supply of the higher dose flu shot approved for those 65 and older.   The best recommendation is to call ahead about availability as several of the local flu shot providers are considering re-ordering vaccine.

Hospitals throughout the country are asking those who feel they have flu to refrain from emergency room visits.

Washing your hands frequently with an abundance of water and staying away from those who are sick are two simple ways to help stop the spread of the flu.
