BOONE, Iowa—What started out to be an exciting season for the Boone Parks Department came to a halt in a hurry Monday morning. That’s when staffers discovered that the ice had been vandalized. The pond was drawing a large turnout of skaters over the past week, especially when volunteers and staffers were able to keep the warming building open. Skaters were on the ice Sunday evening, when the warming building had to be closed. Outside the building is a water hydrant that staff uses to spray water on the ice to smooth the surface. Overnight, someone cut the paddle lock on the hydrant and turned the water on, which allowed it run onto the ice, eventually causing the damage. The popular past time will be curtailed until Mother Nature has a chance to freeze the pond over once again.
