School Resource Officer Discussion Moves to City Council

BOONE, Iowa—The Friday tragedy in Connecticut will probably draw additional attention to the discussion going on in Boone about the position of a School Resource Officer.  The Boone School Board this week began discussing the possibility of discontinuing the program because of increasing costs and also the position had to be moved to the General Fund portion of the district’s budget.  That is the same portion of the budget that funds teaching positions.  Last year, general fund expenditures were reduced by $400,000 and this week, Dr. Brad Manard said they would look at reductions of another $400,000 t0 $450,000.  Roughly 80% of the General Fund portion of the budget goes to pay staff.  The Board and Administration has been pleased with the success of the School Resource Officer position and especially with Boone Police Officer Dave Powers.  He said the board has not made any final decisions, but has tried to stay away from making cuts in classroom staff.  Last Tuesday, Manard told the School Board the matter would be on Monday’s City Council Agenda to see if there are any options available that might benefit both the school district and the city.
