BOONE, Iowa—Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr says the time is right to step away from his job as Boone County Sheriff and take a look at some other challenges for himself and his wife Sandy. Fehr has been with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department since 1982 and has been Sheriff since first winning election in 1988. He says the first election and a tough race in 1996 were elections that he’ll remember a long time. Because of his plans, he announced a year ago that he would retire and would not seek re-election. Chief Deputy Gregg Elsberry will be sworn in as the next Boone County Sheriff, but has been filling in often this past year. Fehr says he’s proud to the accomplishments that have been made, the new jail and communications center, which really isn’t that new anymore. The year before the jail was built, Fehr said he had to budget $600,000 just for transporting and housing prisoners. Fehr said on the KWBG Tuned In program he’s been fortunate to have had a good team, deputies, jailers, dispatchers and civil deputies in the front office. He also said he would do it all over again.
