BOONE, Iowa—The race for Boone County Sheriff was close as expected. Democratic candidate Gregg Elsberry is the apparent winner with 6,962 votes to Republican candidate Rick Lampe’s 6,807 votes. The results will be official when they are canvased by the Boone County Board of Supervisors. There are still a number of absentee ballots that are unaccounted for and some are expected to arrive via mail in time to be counted. However, the number is not expected to impact the final outcome. The election marks the first time in nearly 30-years that the winner was not named Ron Fehr. Fehr decided last year not to seek re-election and to take retirement. Elsberry has been Chief Deputy and Jail Administrator. Lampe, a retired State Trooper is currently the Boone County 911 Coordinator and has been focused on bringing the counties communication system into compliance with a mandated narrow banding process.
