LOS ANGELES (AP) – It took the new-look Los Angeles Lakers a while to break into the win column, but they did it in a big way last night. After dropping their first three games of the new NBA season, the L.A. Lakers trounced Detroit 108-79 behind Dwight Howard’s 28 points.
ATLANTA (AP) – The Atlanta Falcons are halfway through a perfect season. The Falcons improved to 8-0 and stayed the only unbeaten team in the NFL by beating Dallas 19-13 as Matt Ryan completed 24 of 34 for 342 yards and Matt Bryant kicked four field goals.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Tampa Bay rookie Doug Martin rushed for a franchise-record 251 yards and four touchdowns and the Buccaneers held on to beat the Oakland Raiders 42-32 to even their mark at 4-4. Martin, the 31st pick in the draft out of Boise State who was born in Oakland, had a memorable homecoming by scoring on runs of 1, 45, 67 and 70 yards in the second half.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers, arriving just hours before game time to avoid the disruption in north Jersey from Hurricane Sandy, rallied to end the Super Bowl champion New York Giants’ four-game winning streak, 24-20. Isaac Redman ran for 14 yards and the winning score with 4:02 left.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -Jimmie Johnson has a seven-point lead over Brad Keselowski with two races left in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship. Johnson won at Texas Motor Speedway for his second straight Chase victory to expand his lead over Keselowski, who finished second in Texas.
