GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – The San Francisco 49ers have opened a two-game lead in the NFC West where they own a 6-2 mark at the halfway point of the NFL season. Alex Smith completed 18 of 19 passes and threw a pair of touchdown passes to Michael Crabtree and one to Randy Moss in the 49ers’ 24-3 romp past Arizona, which lost its fourth in a row.

UNDATED (AP) – The NFL has moved its trading deadline back two days until Thursday. That was probably the biggest effect Hurricane Sandy had on the sports world, which largely was unaffected by the big storm in the Northeast.

MIAMI (AP) – Ready or not, the NBA regular season tips off tonight. The Miami Heat will be raising their championship banner during pre-game ceremonies before the Heat plays the Boston Celtics.

UNDATED (AP) – Two other games are on tonight’s NBA’s opening night schedule, including the Washington Wizards visiting Cleveland. In the final game of the night, Kobe Bryant’s status is unclear as he is recovering from a foot injury as the new-look Los Angeles Lakers host the Dallas Mavericks.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -College sports rule-breakers are about to find out just how tough the NCAA can be. After debating changes for more than a year, the NCAA board of directors is poised to vote today on an enforcement proposal that would streamline the infractions process and impose harsher sanctions on violators.
