SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The will be a Game 7 in the National League Championship Series tonight following the Giants’ 6-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in San Francisco. Marco Scutaro (SKOO’-tah-roh) hit a two-run double and scored twice to support Ryan Vogelsong, who limited the Redbirds to a run and four hits while striking out nine in seven innings. The Giants are 5-0 in elimination games this season, while the Cardinals are 1-3 when trying to close out series.
BOSTON (AP) – John Farrell has been hired as the new manager of the Boston Red Sox after two seasons as Toronto’s skipper. The Red Sox obtained the rights to their former pitching coach by trading infielder Mike Aviles (ah-VEE’-lihs) to Toronto. Farrell had been the Jays skipper the past two seasons, posting a 154-170 record with two fourth-place finishes.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma made his season debut Sunday while appealing a suspension for his role in the Saints bounty program. The ninth-year pro didn’t start but did get on the field throughout the opening half of the Saints’ game against Tampa Bay. Vilma finished with one quarterback hit but no tackles in a 35-28 victory over the Buccaneers.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) – Brad Keselowski (kehz-LOW’-skee) still holds a seven-point lead over Jimmie Johnson in NASCAR’s Chase for the Championship with four races remaining after they finished eighth and ninth respectively at Kansas Speedway yesterday. Matt Kenseth won the Hollywood Casino 400, edging Martin Truex Jr. for his second victory of the Chase. Denny Hamlin’s 13th-place finish keeps him third in the points race, 20 off the lead and five ahead of Clint Bowyer (BOY’-ur).
