Ryan Ludwick homered and Bronson Arroyo retired the first 14 batters in a dominating pitching performance for the Reds, holding the Giants to one hit over seven innings.
BALTIMORE (AP) – Russell Martin’s leadoff home run in the ninth inning keyed a five-run uprising in the ninth in the New York Yankees’ 7-2 win over Baltimore in the opener of that AL Division Series. This was the Orioles’ first playoff game in 15 years and they will home again for Game 2 Monday night.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – In their first postseason appearance in their history, the Washington Nationals rallied for a 3-2 victory of St. Louis in the opener of their NL Division Series. Rookie Tyler Moore delivered a two-out, two-run pinch-hit single in the eighth inning for the go-ahead run.
DETROIT (AP) – The Detroit Tigers have taken a 2-0 lead in their AL Division Series against Oakland. Don Kelly’s walkoff sacrifice fly gave the Tigers a 5-4 victory with Game 3 set for Oakland on Tuesday night.
NEW ORLEANS (AP)- New Orleans QB Drew Brees threw four TD passes last night to set the NFL record with touchdown passes in 48 straight games, breaking the mark set by Johnny Unitas a half-century ago. The record-setting scoring strike was a 40-yard pass to Devery Henderson in the Saints’ 31-24 win over the San Diego Chargers.
