BALTIMORE (AP) – Gene Steratore’s officiating crew was the first to work an NFL game since the league ended its lockout and reached a tentative contract agreement with the referees’ union. M&T Bank Stadium erupted in cheers last night after Steratore brought the captains of the Browns and Ravens together for the coin toss, turned on his microphone and said, “Good evening men. It’s good to be back.” Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) apologized to the fans yesterday for putting them through the work stoppage, but he also played down how much the Green Bay-Seattle game played into the final agreement.
BALTIMORE (AP) – Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco completed 28 of 46 passes for 356 yards in a 23-16 win over the Browns. He also threw for a touchdown and ran for another as Baltimore improved to 3-1 with its ninth straight win over Cleveland. Cary Williams returned an interception 63 yards for a score near the end of the third quarter to give the Ravens a 13-point lead.
NEW YORK (AP) – Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita is scheduled to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Friday about his suspension in the Saints’ bounty case that was temporarily lifted earlier this month. Fujita was suspended for three games for his role in the bounty program while he played for New Orleans.
UNDATED (AP) – The American League division races now have the Yankees topping the East by just one game over Baltimore, the Tigers two games ahead of the White Sox in the Central and the West-leading Rangers four games in front of Oakland. The Yankees were 6-0 losers in Toronto, the Tigers downed Kansas City 5-4, the White Sox fell 3-2 to Tampa Bay and the Rangers outscored the Athletics 9-7.
MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) – Europe begins defense of the Ryder Cup with four matches of alternate-shot foursomes this morning before four more matches of fourballs in the afternoon. World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and countryman Graeme McDowell will be first off the tee against U.S. players Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker at Medinah Country Club in Illinois.
