BALTIMORE (AP) – The Baltimore Orioles swatted six home runs in a 10-6 victory over New York that lifts the Orioles into a first place tie with the Yankees atop the AL East. Mark Reynolds hit two of the Orioles’ six homers, including three in a wild eighth inning that gave the Orioles their 10th win in 13 games.

NEW YORK (AP) – Defending U.S. Open champion and No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) defeated 2009 champion and No. 7 seed Juan Martin del Potro (wahn mar-TEEN’ dehl POHT’-roh) in straight sets to reach the semifinals at the final Grand Slam event of the year. David Ferrer (feh-REHR’), the fourth-seed, outlasted eighth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic (YAHN’-koh tihp-SAYR’-oh-vihch) to reach the semifinals for the second time in his career.

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) -Rory McIlroy starts second-round play at the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick in Indiana in a four-way tie for the top spot. Bo Van Pelt, U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and Graham DeLaet of Canada also shot 64 yesterday with Tiger Woods looming one shot.

BALTIMORE (AP)- The NFL is mourning the death of 87-year-old Art Modell, who was an owner in the league for 43 seasons with both the original Cleveland Browns and later the Baltimore Ravens. Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis calls Modell “one of the most awesome men I’ve ever met in my life.”

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon are basically racing against each other Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway for the one wild card berth remaining in the 12-driver Chase for the Championship. Bush clinches if he wins or loses by 12 or fewer spots to Gordon, who will make it into the Chase by finishing 13 points ahead of Busch.
