NEW YORK (AP) -There’s been a big upset at the U.S. Open. Men’s top seed and five-time champion Roger Federer was ousted before the semifinals at the Open for the first time since 2003, losing to sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych (TOH’-mahs bur-DEEK’) 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 last night.

NEW YORK (AP) – Andy Roddick’s tennis career ended yesterday at age 30. Roddick, who announced last week he was retiring at the end of his run at the U.S. Open, lost a four-set match to 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro (wahn mar-TEEN’ dehl POHT’-roh) in a match spread over two days because of rain.

UNDATED (AP) – The New York Yankees are back in first place in the AL East after beating Tampa Bay 6-4. Meanwhile, the second-place Baltimore Orioles were dropping a 6-4 decision to the Toronto Blue Jays.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Adrian Beltre (BEHL’-tray) hit a three-run homer, Michael Young also went deep and the Texas Rangers held on for a 7-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals last night. Ryan Dempster improved to 5-1 since the Rangers acquired him from the Chicago Cubs.
