CHICAGO (AP) – Minnesota unleashed a torrent of offense with seven and ten run innings in an 18-9 pounding of the White Sox. Chris Parmelee homered and drove in four runs and Ryan Doumit (DOH’-miht) homered among his three hits and drove in three. Minnesota pecked away with 17 hits, all but three were singles.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – The Yankees’ run of 84 straight days with sole possession of first place in the AL East is over. Tampa Bay got homers from Evan Longoria, Desmond Jennings and B.J. Upton in a 5-2 win over New York that dropped the Yankees into a first-place tie with Baltimore.

NEW YORK (AP) – Despite a season-opening 49-10 win over Hawaii, Southern California has dropped to second in this week’s Associated Press college football poll. Alabama has taken over as No. 1 picking up 45 first-place votes to 11 for the Trojans. The Tide rolled over Michigan 41-14 in the opener.

MIAMI (AP) – Quarterback David Garrard (guh-RARD’) has gone from starting quarterback to out of work in the space of three weeks. Garrard has been released by the Miami Dolphins, leaving Matt Moore as the veteran backup to rookie starter Ryan Tannehill. Garrard topped the depth chart in training camp before having knee surgery on Aug. 11. He then lost the starting job to Tannehill.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Matt Kenseth has finally announced he’ll drive for Joe Gibbs Racing starting next season on NASCAR’s Sprint Cup circuit. It was widely anticipated that Kenseth was making the move after he announced during the current season he was parting was with Roush Fenway Racing after 13 seasons.
