BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) – The 16th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies outlasted Georgia Tech 20-17 on Cody Journell’s 17-yard field goal that ended the first overtime game in the history of Lane Stadium. Journell forced overtime with a 41-yard field goal at the end of regulation after missing a 38-yarder earlier.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The Oakland Athletics’ season-best nine-game winning streak is over. The L.A. Angels got home runs from Chris Iannetta, Vernon Wells and Torii Hunter to beat the Athletics 8-3 to help C.J. Wilson win his 11th game.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -The San Francisco Giants rallied past Arizona 9-8 on a game-winning hit in the 10th inning by Marco Scutaro (SKOO’-tah-roh). The L.A. Dodgers remained four and a-half games back of the Giants after rallying to beat the San Diego Padres 4-3 in 11 innings on A.J. Ellis’s game-winning single.

SEATTLE (AP) – Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington admits his current team “is hard to watch.” Cherington offered the assessment before Boston fell to Seattle 4-1 yesterday for the Red Sox’ seventh straight loss to fall to 62-74.

NEW YORK (AP) – They’re into the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open and there’s a dandy women’s matchup today at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Top-seed Victoria Azarenka (ah-zah-REN’-kuh) takes on defending champion and seventh-seed Sam Stosur.
