LOS ANGELES (AP) – It took three games, but Mike Brown finally
has earned his first victory as L.A. Lakers coach. Playing their
third game in three nights, the Lakers got 26 points from Kobe
Bryant and outclassed the Utah Jazz 96-71 last night at Staples
Center.

MIAMI (AP) – The Miami Heat have started fast, winning two games
handily and only trailing once — by two points, for all of 14
seconds. LeBron James scored 26 points, rookie point guard Norris
Cole scored 14 of his 20 in the fourth quarter, and the Heat nearly
blew a 20-point lead before beating the Boston Celtics 115-107.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Alex Dragicevich (DRAG’-ee-vihch) hit
four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 22 points to lead Notre
Dame to a 72-59 win over No. 22 Pittsburgh in the Big East opener
for both teams. That’s 28 straight home wins for the Irish.

UNDATED (AP)–Purdue and N.C. State were winners in bowl games
yesterday. The Boilermakers held off Western Michigan 37-32 in the
Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit and the Wolfpack beat
Louisville 31-24 in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C.

DENVER (AP) – In the NHL, Evander Kane scored two goals, Ondrej
Pavelec (AWN’-dray PAH’-veh-lehk) made 32 saves, and the Winnipeg
Jets handed the Colorado Avalanche their first home loss in a
month, 4-1. That snapped the Avs’ eight-game home win streak.
